Not For Profit – Forming Groups

14th March, 2012 - Posted by Gavin - Comments Off on Not For Profit – Forming Groups

I am always amazed how much we seem to get done in just two hours! This week we had a couple of new people join the group and welcomed back some members who had not been for a few weeks.

We started the session by thinking about ground rules. It may seem an odd time in week 6 to be doing this but by this time the group had experience of working with each other and could make informed choices about the rules they wished to make. My favourite was definitely to make sure that all sweets are shared with all members of the group!

A group forms around an image

After a quick warm up including making our bodies into toys, we spent the rest of the session thinking about the work we have done so far and splitting into two groups which will eventually create pieces of Forum Theatre. However because this is a theatre group we did this by making images, observing images, proposing and offering images and standing with images we recognised and were interested in working on.

A second group forms

By the end of the session we had formed two groups with very different images to work on in the weeks to come.

We ended by remembering that Friday 16th March is International Theatre of the Oppressed Day because this would have been Augusto Boal’s Birthday. So I ended the session with a favourite Boal quote:

“We should have our feet on the ground in the concrete reality we live in, our heads in the sky looking to where we want to go, but most importantly our hands should be busy making a better world”

Viva Boal!
