Pinar talks about our recent performances as part of the People Power:Creating the Conditions for Change conference in Perth:
I think using Forum theatre in various communities to discuss issues which concern the community is the greatest tool ever. It can be understood by everyone as we don’t need to speak the same language to make a Forum Theatre play.
On Monday 29th February, which is also leap year, Gavin and myself attended the People Power: Creating the Conditions for Change conference in Perth and performed a Forum play which had been created with a group of health service users and professionals. It was an intense but exciting experience. We worked with the group for a very short time and created a wonderful Forum play which looked at communication difficulties within the health sector.
As we performed the play, the conference members managed to engage with the play and found similarities within their practice. This was interesting for me as it reflected how everyone is aware of the issue and willing to make changes.
I can easily say Forum Theatre is one of the best tools to engage with the people who have never done any theatre. It creates a platform for everyone to discuss ideas for change and engage people through a creative method.
By using Forum Theatre, we can engage with various community groups and enable people to think critically. People Power: Creating the Conditions for Change conference in Perth was an example which shows the power of Forum Theatre and how it can be used as a tool for making changes.
