Flashplay continues to provoke!

On Saturday 15th October a few of us decided to perform the current Flashplay that we devised in September in a few locations along Leith Walk. Flashplay is a type of theatre that uses instant performances in public spaces to raise awareness about a particular issue.
Our current Flashplay raises concerns about Edinburgh Council’s plans to privatise public services. UNISON held a rally in the morning at The Mound and we all met there to hear campaigners from the unions and local campaign groups including Greater Leith Against the Cuts speak on the danger of privatising public services and the lack of consultation with the public.
Then it was time to perform our Flashplay. We did 5 performances in all at the St James Centre, by “the foot”, the Playhouse, outside Vittorias and at the Kirkgate Shopping Centre.
Each performance started quite slowly with Nick and Eleni setting out our stage and gradually getting interest from passers-by:
And then moved into Nick C and Nick G inviting passers-by to experience our unique privatised public space with its own busker:
A member of the public takes part in our free trial
All the time we were handing out flyers and talking to people about the privatisation plans. We were pleased that many people asked us questions and we felt that it was more effective than just flyering at getting people’s attention.
The Council will vote on these plans on Thursday 27th October. Please contact your councillors before then to ask them questions about why there has been no public consultation on an issue that will effect everyone in Edinburgh. There is also a protest on the 27th at the City Chambers starting at 8.30am

That’s great Gavin. Looks like everybody enjoyed themselves. I’m sorry I couldn’t be there with you.
